When Charlie's mom arrives to pick him up at the end of the day, the reunion is joyous. They're happy to see each other! Karen and Sherma use a photo of Charlie and his mom as a transitional object; this strategy is designed to help ease Charlie's separation anxiety and today it seems to have worked.
